I have been a potter for around 7 years and I am mainly self taught. I run a holiday cottage business with my husband at Allt Yr Ynys (Allt Cottages) and developed my love of clay as a new hobby to balance the hours of work we were putting into developing our business. I soon became addicted to pottery. So much so, I built a studio alongside one of our holiday cottages (The Potting Shed). Now we offer up the space to guests wishing to engage in a creative activity during their holiday with us. I've recently expanded and opened up the studio to the local community, widening the access to this facility and enabling me to engage more in the process of teaching and supporting beginner & intermediate potters in a warm and friendly environment.
I am just like you; interested in pottery/ceramics and on a journey of discovering all about clay and how it works. I love to explore the ‘why’ as well as make. I like to experiment, create, scream with frustration and laugh with joy when something finally goes right. Sadly, I am not a seasoned, advanced wheel thrower who can whip a four foot vase off the wheel at a moment's notice (I'm still working on getting there). I know a quite a bit about quite a few things. I have spent a lot of time making mistakes so I can help you avoid them. I can teach you the basics and provide advice and help to guide you along the way. I will be able to make suggestions that suit your experience level (so you don’t start to make a teapot on day one - setting expectations for you so you can grow and gain confidence without reaching for the stars too early in your new found hobby). I can explain the stages of clay, demonstrate how to throw on the wheel, tell you why your clay dried out or warped, show you how to repair cracks in your clay, advise you on the many techniques you can use to decorate your work and how to store your work so you can come back to it at another session. I can show you how to mix glazes and underglazes (if you want to learn) and how to avoid the pitfalls that we all fall into on occasion. I will jump with joy with you when your piece comes out of the kiln -looking just fabulous - and I will commiserate with you when it doesn’t. We can discuss what might have gone wrong (I won’t know all the answers but each mistake is an opportunity to learn a little more). I will happily walk you around our site to collect flowers/plants and other organic materials that I can show you how to use in your clay. I will be scratching my head after you have left and working out how to improve the workshop or solve a problem we’ve just experienced. I have found a love of working with clay and discovering all about its wonderful properties. I want to share what I know with you so you can enjoy the experience too.
I learned my skills at Court Robert Arts under the tuition of Christine Roberts. I have attended wheel throwing courses to learn the basics at Hereford College of Arts. I sell a few bits and pieces on Etsy and in our holiday cottages to visiting guests. Everything else I have learnt is self-taught. I am opening up my studio to you to engage and share in the experience of working with clay. I look forward to meeting you.
