CANCELLATION BY YOU
You are welcome to cancel up to one week before your workshop. You will be refunded the Deposit payment.
If you cancel within one week of the workshop, your deposit payment will be forefited unless the space is filled from the reserve list. We will do our best to fill the space but cannot make any guarantees.
There is no obligation to come on consecutive sessions but if you do not attend for six weeks or more (when sessions are running), your work in progress and any completed pieces will be thrown away as there is limited space in the studio. Jo will contact you before your pieces are removed, to give you an opportunity to collect or attend another workshop to complete your work.
CANCELLATION BY BREAKFORTHEBORDER STUDIO
If the workshop session is cancelled, you will be given a minimum of 24 hours notice, unless it is due to illness. Cancellation will be as a result of but not limited to: equipment not working; problems with studio services (heating/lighting etc); force majeure or circumstances beyond our control. You will not be charged for the session and you will be offered an alternative workshop date.
All new members will be given a short induction into the studio for health and safety and fire risk. This is included in your first session. You will be asked to sign the Studio Terms and Conditions/Rules of the Studio sheets to show you have read and accepted them.
FIRING
Jo will aim to fire work as quickly as possible but cannot guarantee a piece will be fired by any particular date. If you are making or painting a piece for a specific occasion, you should plan to undertake your work at least two weeks or more before you need it, to avoid disappointment. It must be expected that pieces will occasionally explode/crack/blister/dunt/craze during a firing. This is part of learning the process of working with clay and must be expected. On rare occasions, bisqueware pieces used for pottery painting workshops may crack in the final firing. You should not become attached to a piece of your work until it comes out of the final kiln firing. Focus for pottery workshops should be on learning a skill set, developing techniques and an understanding of the art of working with clay. Not all of your work will come out of the kiln as you had hoped. This is an excellent process to help you understand where mistakes were made and what to improve for the next piece of work.
We cannot be held responsible for any of the above incidents occurring during the firing process. If Jo is responsible for a breakage whilst loading the kiln, options will be discussed with you on a one-to-one basis.
The kiln may be firing during a workshop. It will be extremely hot and you should not enter this area at any time. Never look through the peep holes as this may damage your eyes.
COLLECTION OF YOUR WORK
Collection of work will normally take place at one of your workshop sessions. If you wish to collect it at other times, please contact Jo at Breakfortheborder100@gmail.com. Your item will be left in a secure location on site to collect at a time to suit you. Jo reserves the right to throw away uncollected pieces of work 6 weeks after your last workshop session.
CLAY
Only work completed in the studio workshops will be fired in the kiln. Please do not bring in any unfinished work that has not been created in the studio as it will not be able to be fired. Beginners will be working with stoneware buff clay which is microwave/dishwasher/oven and food safe. Each piece you make must have your name or initials inscribed on the base when made (for identification purposes). Jo reserves the right not to fire any pieces that cannot be identified to a member.
GLAZES
All glaze materials will be provided. Almost all are dinnerware/food safe. We cannot guarantee that all the glazes will be available at all times and will do our best to reorder glaze items as quickly as possible. There is a wide range of glazes (and underglazes) to suit a range of styles which should be sufficient for you to have plenty of options for your work.
OTHER PEOPLES WORK
You should not pick up or touch any other work in the studio other than your own work. Items can be extremely brittle, especially if not fired. You will take full responsibility for any items damaged as a result of your actions and liaise directly with the owner of the piece of work to resolve any damage issues.
A group - ‘Skirrid Potters’, uses the studio on Thursdays during the day. Their glazes and equipment are stored in the studio and should not be used by anyone attending the workshops. They have their own dedicated space in the studio and items are marked ‘Skirrid Potters’.
CONDUCT
Workshops are run at Breakfortheborder studio which is located on the site of a group of four holiday cottages. Please be respectful of all guests staying at the cottages on site at all times, being particularly careful of noise when arriving and leaving the premises, especially at evening workshops. Please always drive with extreme care as there may be ‘free range’ young children and /or animals anywhere on site.
Please be respectful of all members attending the workshops and it is expected you conduct yourself in a sensible, helpful and inclusive manner at all times. Members of the group will be working on different pieces and at different stages. It is expected that you will show respect to other members' work, engage in helping others who may not have as many developed skills as yourself and work collaboratively with the group. Jo will be available at all sessions to offer advice, support and skills development. Please respect that at times she may be working with another member but she will do her best to attend to your queries as soon as she can.
READING MATERIAL
These are for use in the Studio only and should not be taken out of the building at any time unless agreed with Jo. Any items removed should be returned in person or by post otherwise you may be charged for a replacement copy.
PINTEREST BOARDS
You will be provided links to the curated Pinterest boards as a member of the workshops. You must not share these links with anyone else as they are the copyright of Breakfortheborder Studio and have been provided as part of the workshop package.
SMOKING
There is a no smoking policy anywhere on site.
VAPING
You are welcome to vape outside but not in the garden of The Potting Shed. No vaping in the studio, entrance hallway or studio loo. Vaping will trigger smoke alarms across the whole site.
Our aim is to provide a warm and welcoming and educational environment for you to develop your pottery skills in a friendly, collaborative atmosphere. However, if you are unhappy with any aspect of the workshops, you should talk to Jo directly (or via email) in the first instance so she can look at the best way to rectify the issue. It is best if you bring any queries you have to Jo’s attention sooner rather than later so that she has an opportunity to make changes/explain situations before they escalate.
