Breakfortheborder Studio specializes Beginner and Intermediate pottery workshops and painting workshops. Pottery Workshops are for those who wish to learn and develop their skills in handbuilding and throwing on the wheel. Painting workshops are aimed at people who have more interest in focusing on colour, design and pattern on an already prepared piece of bisqueware clay.
No, not at all. Just come with enthusiam and a mindset willing to learn a new skill. Jo is very used to teaching new potters and will guide you through all the basics to get you set up so you can launch forth and start making.
No, not at all. As long as you are keen to make something, you can create all sorts of patterns and designs that don't require any artistic skill. Before your session, you will be sent some ideas from a curated pinterest board to inspire you in all things colour, design and pattern. Jo will instruct you on what to do so you can launch forth and start painting.
Workshops will 'pop up' on the website for you to book. They are not set times each week but specific dates and times, so it's always worth checking back regularly to see if new dates have been added. You can join our mailing list if you would like regular updates on new workshop dates and information on special classes or events.
Pottery and Painting Workshops will be available weekdays and weekends, with morning, afternoon and evening slots and will be listed online and on our facebook page.
Each workshop lasts two and a half hours with the last fifteen minutes used for clearing away and tidying up the studio. The 'Make and Decorate a Pinch Pot' workshop is 3 hours.

All ages are welcome. Children under 18 years of age are welcome to attend but they must be accompanied by a paying adult. Small children may be limited when working with clay so we would recommend 8 yrs and above as a guide but if you feel your younger child will benefit from the workshops please do not be put off from booking.
Please contact me to find a suitable date listed on the website for your group to attend. Pottery Workshops are up to 8 max and Painting Workshops 10 max. If you would like to book out a specific date for a private group workshop, please get in touch with Jo directly to discuss your requirements.
We provide School Buff Stoneware clay for beginner classes. This can be used in the oven/microwave/dishwasher. It is excellent for hand building and learning to throw on the wheel. It has a buff colour to it once it has been fully fired.
The initial focus will be on hand building basics: learning to make coil, pinch and slab work. There will be opportunities for you to access the wheel during the sessions but you will first have to be shown how to throw which Jo will do when she has time. She may not be able to do this for the first couple of sessions you attend but don't worry, you will be happily engrosed in creating some lovely hand built pieces. If you would like to book a 1:1 dedicated 2 1/2 hour beginners session on the wheel with Jo, do get in touch.
If you are attending regular pottery workshops, you will be able to collect your fired work when you attend your workshop.
If you are attending a pottery painting workshop, Jo will contact you by email or text to let you know your pieces are ready for collection. You will be able to arrange a time to collect them or they will be left in a 'collection' box on site for you to pick up at a time to suit you.
Please note: there is no guarantee on the timings of firing your pieces. Please do not book a painting session with the expectation of having a piece ready for an event that falls within one month of the workshop. Jo will aim to fire your work as quickly as possible but you should expect to wait weeks rather than days for firing.
Once you have finished a piece of work in the pottery workshops, it will need to dry out completely before it can be fired. This can take up to 1-2 weeks depending on the size/thickness of the item and environmental factors. Do not create a piece with a tight deadline as you may be disappointed. Please plan your work so you have plenty of time to let it dry and have it fired.
